The new library building opened in September 2006 and was extended and remodelled again during 2015. As well as a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books (including a good sprinkling of new hardback titles), there are DVDs in English and Asian languages for one-week loans (small fee). Books in Urdu, Gujarati, Bengali, Arabic, Welsh and Somali. Free internet access on 14 computers for members, and printouts are only 20p per sheet. It's free to join, just take along any form of ID. Children will need to have a permission form filled in by their parent/guardian. The library also carries a supply of leaflets, information and green recycling and food waste bags.

The revamped building operates as a community hub and also now has a cafe and a community room, which is available for use in the evenings.

Services include housing and benefits advice, into-work services, a coffee shop that will be run by BRG Communities First and Citizen's Advice.

Popular pub-restaurant - part of the small Clover Leaf chain - which opened in December 2013. Divided into two dining areas with two entrances - one for families and one aimed at couples/adults, which is a nice touch. There are generous portions from a menu ranging from chicken, pasta, to steaks and although it can be very busy, the staff were friendly and attentive. There is a carvery service option for selected meals for those who don't want to wait. The restaurant also has a speciality for gateaux and desserts, with a "cake-away" option. Usually two Greene King beers served and a decent wine selection.

    CAFÉS:

Black and White Café, North Clive Street/corner of Penarth Road. 029 20 344408. Long-established cafe, which has been going since 1971 and re-opened in late 2019 after nearly three years closed for redevelopment. The good news is that little has changed - even though it's a new building now. Even the chairs and tables are the same and the ambience is thankfully much the same as many of us remember. The lack of change also goes for the prices. Full breakfasts (still around £5 with a mug of tea), lunches and puddings, plus vegetarian and Mexican options have been added by owner George to the menu.

Blend 104 Clare Road. Recently-opened corner coffee house. A friendly welcome from Shiraz guaranteed as well as some great brews and range of coffees and teas, plus an excellent range of cakes, muffins and gateaux, also a range of toasties to eat in or take-away. Open seven days.

    The Marl
Grange Gardens, Holmesdale St, Corporation Rd A Victorian park, well laid out and winner of Green Flag awards. Sadly, the 100-year-old bowling green is no longer operating due to cutbacks. The bandstand has been restored in recent years to keep its original feel. There's now a revamped play area and tennis courts. A Grade II-listed war memorial dates from 1921. There are park benches, as well as modern play area. A park for all ages. Served by the No 8 bus. There's more on Grange Gardens on our history page.

The Marl, Ferry Road Large expanse of green, with a long history for local sporting teams, including baseball and rugby going back more than 100 years. There are also all-weather sports pitches, as well as the adjoining Channel View Leisure Centre. Despite the encroachment of some waterside flat developments on its fringes, this is still a popular and large open space. Served by bus 9

Sevenoaks Park, Virgil St/Sloper Road Also known locally as "The Tan," after the long-gone tannery, this park is also popular with football and baseball teams. The seven oaks give its name and it is bordered too by the railway. There's now a legal graffiti wall all along the railway side (a section is pictured left), which has been colourfully painted over at annual graffiti and hip-hop events. Served by buses 92 and 94

Courtmead Gardens, Court Rd/Hereford St/Rutland St. Community garden opened in 2006 as part of North Grangetown regeneration project. Children helped design a nautical-themed pathway winding through it. This was a patch of wasteland for 30 years, after the old Court Road school was demolished. Served by buses 92 and 94, get off near The Cornwall

Grangemore Park, off Ferry Road/Cardiff Bay retail park. A little oasis of wild flowers and grass, with a panoramic view of the city and the Bay from the top of the man-made hill. Hard to believe this used to be an old landfill tip in the 1970s and '80s, where the only association with nature was the clouds of seagulls which hovered over it. A short walk from the retail park carpark to stone seats and industrial sculpture at the top. Picnic area at the bottom and popular with dog walkers. Opened in 2000, with a central feature at the top designed with the help of Grangetown History Society. Artist Ian Randall, whose Silent Links ironwork is the centrepiece said it is supposed to reflect residents’ fears that Grangetown was being "nibbled at" by overdevelopment but also that they wanted to re-state the area’s strong identity – the sculpture’s links like the people were "firm and interlocked with a sense of strength and unity." There is a cycle/pedetrian path (Ely Trail) running alongside the River Ely, the other side of the hill - one entrance starts between the scout hall and the gas works and comes out by the fly-over into Dunleavy Drive; another entrance is in Penarth Road (just before the river bridge/entrance to the Pumping Station). There are a couple of riverside picnic areas. Served by the No 9 bus.
